Die namensgebenden Begriffe „Kommerz, Kunst, Kino" versteht Festivalleiter Fritz Hock als Ansporn Grenzen zu ziehen um sie gleichzeitig zu überschreiten: „Je nach unserer Perspektive können alle drei Begriffe negative Konnotationen annehmen. In der Festivalprogrammierung sind sie der Leitfaden das positive und wesentliche der Begriffe hervorzukehren. Auf den Punkt gebracht könnte man sagen: Unterhaltung ist gut, Kunst ist wichtig!, aber auch umgekehrt." Den Schritt über die Grenzen schaffte K3 tatsächlich im Jahre 2011 nach Udine, Italien und 2012 nach Laibach, Slowenien, wo es seither in einer grenzüberschreitenden Konzeption alljährlich stattfindet.

Festival director Fritz Hock sees the eponymous terms "commerce, art, cinema" as an incentive to draw boundaries around them, and then to cross them at the same time: "Depending on our perspective, all three terms can take on negative connotations. For the festival programming, they have become the guide to emphasize the positive and essential meaning of this terms. In a nutshell, one could say: "Entertainment is good, art is important, but it is also true the other way round. K3 actually managed to step over the borders in 2011 to Udine, Italy and in 2012 to Ljubljana, Slovenia, where it has since been held every year in a transnational conception.
