Fetalmedizin Feldkirch is a highly specialized center situated in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg providing services to pregnant women and their unborn fetuses.
The service procured includes ultrasound scans (first trimester scan, anomaly scan, growth scan) and invasive procedures like chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, fetal blood transfusion, amnioinfusion, amniodrainage and others. Pregnancies complicated by fetal diseases, e.g. fetal growth restriction, structural fetal anomalies, multiple gestations, etc. are looked after according to latest scientific evidence. In cooperation with the University Hospital Innsbruck PD Dr Scheier performs surgical treatment of complicated monochorionic pregnancies like laser coagulation of vascular anastomoses.
Further than that the center provides services to pregnant women with chronic diseases as lupus erythematodes, maternal kidney disease, and others. Patients with pregnancy complications like gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and others are cared for.
The center looks after pregnant women in close collaboration with the women’s obstetricians in order to provide the best possible service to the pregnant women.
On the other side Fetalmedizin Feldkirch collaborates with tertiary referral centers in Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and Vienna to allow women access to highly specialized perinatal care when outpatient treatment is no longer justifiable. This is the more important, as there is no perinatal center grade III in the province of Vorarlberg.
The center is headed by PD Dr Matthias Scheier, who has received his training in fetal medicine at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine, London, Great Britain and at the Fetal and Perinatal Research Group of the University of Barcelona, Spain. He works part-time in fetal medicine at the University Hospital Innsbruck. Besides his medical education Dr Scheier holds a Master of Science degree in psychodynamic-psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
