SEAD is one of Europe's leading centers for contemporary dance. Home to undergraduate training program "Artist in Process" and professional company BODHI PROJECT.
In 1993, Susan Quinn's vision was to create SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) as a centre for training contemporary dancers and choreographers as well as a vibrant space that provides the public performances and education in contemporary dance art. At that time SEAD became one of the first places to offer professional-caliber training for contemporary artists in Austria. SEAD today is an accredited academy with more than 120 international students. In 2001, SEAD's professional training program was honored with the recognition from the Austrian Government as a program of university equivalency. SEAD is a meeting point for experimental collaborations, residencies, and performances. As a cultural space open for the general public SEAD offers an educational program for adults and children (follow https://www.facebook.com/kidsteensadultsinsead/), and organises various events in the field of contemporary dance and performance art.

Undergraduate Program - Artist in Process
SEAD's undergraduate program consists of four years: six sessions of four to six weeks each per year. Successful completion of the four years earns a diploma recognized by the Austrian government of education. Diplomas from SEAD are granted with study major in either choreography or performance.
SEAD's orientation is on practice and the components and organization of the program reflect this. There are many classes and workshops in place that are intended to support and augment practice in areas theoretical, reflective and otherwise related to practical goals for the professional dance artist. All are meant to compliment each other and work together to advance the student toward her potential interests and advancement of her goals and abilities. Components are added to or shifted according to needs of students; daily technical classes remain in place. Practical necessities for making and presenting work, from organization to lighting to publicity are an integral part of the education as well.
Postgraduate Program - BODHI PROJECT
The company year BODHI PROJECT is a post graduate "Artist in Practice" program that offers the graduate dancer the chance to specialize and intensify in the following areas:
- Working with internationally recognized choreographers
- Performance experience
- Dance training
- Creation
It is the place between an educational institution and a professional company. Emphasis is placed on establishing an environment in which unusually talented dancers can concentrate on a laboratory approach to dance creation and performance. Students will have technique classes and rehearsals with a guest choreographer. Performances will be in SEAD's theatre as well as guest performances in the form of a touring program. Only students who show exceptional artistic qualifications and who have completed an educational program can be considered for the company year. After successfully completing the company year the student will receive a certificate.
Postgraduate Program - I.C.E. Choreographer's Year
I.C.E. (International Choreographic Exchange) is for creative students who have completed a professional training program and want to continue for one post graduate year specializing in choreography. I.C.E. students are choreographers who want to work independently in an artistic environment to develop their creativity with the benefit of rehearsal space, dancers, feedback, an international faculty and performance opportunities.
I.C.E. students develop their personal curriculum with the mentor. Their possibilities of yearly study includes presentation of new choreography, a written thesis, a period of studio research, assistance to guest choreographers, production and lighting opportunities and inclusion in the New Faces New Dances - Festival curated by Susan Quinn. Students in the I.C.E. program are allowed to take part in all of the technical classes offered in the professional training program. I.C.E. students receive written, verbal feedback and support from SEAD's faculty during the length of study. The I.C.E. student may be granted an exemption from technical classes if working on an outside project, which may be regarded with equivalence.
The I.C.E. student receives a certificate of one post graduate year after successfully completing the study. In the 6th Session a final review (thesis) will be presented. I.C.E. students must show a final project representing their research and performance activity during their time at SEAD to an invited guest choreographer or teacher along with the I.C.E. mentor. The presentation will be reviewed and critiqued by an outside dance professional with an oral examination in which students will be expected to verbally explain their position of the project.
